Oh, I don't think he thought it through either. But it's not as much of a plothole as many people make it out to be. The explanation may be grasped for in hindsight (actually, I'm not aware Lucas ever used it himself), but it makes perfect sense, so this is not one of the points in the great and tangled plot that irks me. ;)
